Give it up for research grants!
So when Sean and I found out we were pregnant I freaked out. I freaked out about a lot of things but one of the bit reasons was (as mentioned in previous posts) I have some divorce anxiety. So pregnancy and my anxiety were bashing into each other. We talked about it and decided to find a place to take a class on relationships, parenthood, transitions -you know that kind of thing. If only to alleviate some of my fears.
We found a flyer at the Hospital Sean works at that sounded just like what we were looking for. Downside. The class cost over $400! Four hundred dollars seemed like a lot of money for 2 months of Thursday evenings. We'll when we started looking into it anyway and we found out that this organization that is offering the classes is also participating in a nationwide study to examine how community health nurses, education, support through social events, support through a network of professionals and friends and awareness of community services can help parents and families succeed. The upside to participating in the study was all of the support that we were looking for- and of course because it's research it is free! The downside. . . there was a 50% chance we are in the control group. Which means they just see how we do without any support.
So yesterday we went in for the intake interview. They asked me (with Sean in another room) a bunch of questions about domestic violence and such. Then we filled out a personal survey. Finally they entered a bunch of stuff into the database. And we found out we are in!!!!!! - and not in the control group!!!!!!!
So we are getting our relationship class with dinner everytime, and a community health nurse who will work just with us on what WE need, free social events, support, and get this- a $25 gift certificate per person every time we go to our meetings (once a week starting in May into the middle of July)! Oh and what feels like a smaller benefit is if this stuff is beneficial for our relationship and ultimately our child then this will possibly lead to more grants and government funding for supporting young (and low income) families.
So wooooooohooooooo for research!
