Tips for Goodwill
Today, with the exception of my underwear and shoes everything I am wearing I got at goodwill. And, I look nice!
I've discovered a couple goodwill tricks:
- Don't go looking for anything in particular, but have a running list of general needs in your head. Make sure that this need isn't urgent. (and if you don't need it why are you buying it?)
- Don't go on a Saturday or Sunday. It's too busy and by Sunday (our store at least) hasn't put in much new merchandise that people dropped off over the weekend.
- For that reason go on a Monday afternoon or a Tuesday.
- For that reason go on a Monday afternoon or a Tuesday.
For example:
Need: dress pants or J needs long sleeve shirts.
Need: jars for canning.
So I got into goodwill maybe twice a month to look through plus sized clothing section and the baby section. Because both of my needs were general and not specific and weren't urgent enough that we couldn't live without for awhile I could go when.
I have also learned that buying jars for canning things, because at this point I don't have a basement full, is better in the spring when no-one is yet canning.
I love looking down and realizing everything I'm wearing is from Goodwill! You make me want to make another trip there.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I STARTED typing a reply, then accidentally closed the browser window. There went my carefully worded, witty response.
ReplyDeleteThe gist was this:
I am not a thrift shop shopper. Its environment stresses me out. I need things all nice, neat and tidy (which I realize is totally contradictory to my office environment, but whatever!)
I need a rack with blue jackets size 10, 12, 14, 16; red jackets size 10, 12, 14, 16; white jackets size 10, 12, 14, 16, etc.
I was going to tell you that my sister LOVES thrift shop shopping and is a pro. So is my brother. My sister scans for the FABRIC, rather than for the garment. She has found some really cool things. My brother swears by the thrift shops in Redmond. High end stuff at cheap prices. You might go on a field trip someday.
I'm a fabric scavenger as well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, despite the crowds, I love Wednesday's 99 cent tickets. They do the same thing on Sundays as well, but I agree- Sunday is not the day to go to Goodwill.
