Homemade ornaments- Toddler fun Advent style

I am not a classy Christmas tree person.  I don't suppose that's a shock to any of my regular blog readers.  I like it when ornaments and such have a story, history or some kind of meaning. That's probably why I am pretty into making ornaments with Junia this year!

So this weekend, amid work and taking care of a bunch of crap that had to be taken care of, we also started making some holiday treats and whipped up some salt dough.

Ingredients
2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
3/4 cups water

Combine ingredients and knead dough for 15 to 20 minutes. Roll out, cut into shapes with cookie cutters or whatever make sure you put a hole in them, if you intent on hanging them from a Christmas tree and then bake for 20 minutes.   When don't cooking they'll look like this:

Then I handed them over the Junia and let her paint them with watercolors.  They needed to dry but looked pretty fun.  The Santa is actually her handprint.   I am going to try to Modge-Podge a couple of them and see if they get shiny?

All in all, I am delighted in these.  We'll write Junia 2011 on the back and maybe a couple will last for 10 or 15 years.

  1. These are great! Mike and I have a yearly discussion about what to hang on the tree- he still has a ton of ornaments he made as a child, and I want a classy, fancy tree. So far this year we have a tree, with lights, tinsel, and candy canes.

  2. Those are really cute! I love it when ornaments mean something too. Maybe I can try this with Rex...and baby brother in a year or two.

  3. These are great! I remember there being a few hanging on our tree when I was growing up. I might just make some of my own.
